Black Tuesday: Top 10 Holiday Gifts for Writers & A Giveaway!

Β Black Friday approaches, although it’s kind of gotten lost in “Open on Thanksgiving” and “Cyber-Monday.” And if you want to win the cool tote bag pictured to the left, read on…

(And if one lives in the state of Alabama, the day after Thanksgiving has nothing to do with shopping and everything to do with the annual brawlfest known as the Iron Bowl, when bitter rivals Auburn University and the University of Alabama meet in football. I graduated from Bama and work at Auburn, so I’m seriously screwed, no matter how that goes down.)

So, let’s get to shopping early and consider what gifts we can buy for our writer friends (or ourselves, if our friends and family insist on going the sock-underwear-toaster route). In no order:

1. The Antique Typewriter Key Bracelet. Face it–computer keys aren’t nearly this cool. $49.99.

2. The Book Purse. Okay, these are kinda pricey for my budget–about $120–but I’m trying to think how to make one of my own.

3. The Liquid Bookmark. Really good for writers of vampire and other blood-sucking entities. $24 but worth it for the bizarro factor.

4. The Charlotte Bronte Writing Journal, for making all those character notes and keeping your book diaries. $16.95.

5.Β  The Jane Austen Action Figure. Lounges around and produces clever quips. Oh, wait. You have to do that. She’ll watch. $11.95.

6. Book Lovers’ Trivial Pursuit. Because we’re nerdy and always did best on the literature questions in regular Trivial Pursuit. So now we can kick ass and take names and spell them correctly. About $40.

7. Godiva Chocolate Liqueur. Writers love chocolate, and writers love alcohol–it’s a proven fact. So why not combine the two? Guaranteed to bring on the muse, or a nap. $39.

8. Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook, by Donald Maas. Skip the book and go straight to the workbook. I swear to buy one of these to write in and think through before starting any novel, ever again. $13.49.

9. The Book Slut T-Shirt. Because we know who and what we are. $14.99.

10. The Threat Tote Bag. Our families and friends fear it will happen. And it could. Make my day, punk. $17, or WIN ONE HERE!

To be entered to win the tote bag, tell Santa what you most want for Christmas that’s writing or book related. I’ll draw a name at random on Friday. Before the Iron Bowl. (Roll Tide! War Eagle–Hey!)

  1. I really, really want a pair of Boss headphones to wear while I write…because even though my office door is closed, my family members still pop in and out any time they feel like it. VERY distracting. Need headphones to filter noise…oh, and a lock on my office door would help! =D

  2. OMG, love your list. In fact, I’m going to definitely share this post…even though it’ll make it harder for me to win…love that saying on the bag…so that’s what I want, really want…though a publisher’s contract would be nice gift too πŸ˜›

  3. Good one, Theresa! I just found out a friend is giving me a Kindle for Christmas, so now I’m prowling Kindle cases πŸ™‚

    Thanks, Julia!

Christine and Amber–I didn’t think of shelves! Yep, writers (and readers) always need shelves. I actually bought my current house three years ago because it has a LIBRARY in it with floor-to-ceiling built-in bookshelves.

Rashda–isn’t that bag the funniest thing? I love it too.

Renee…Headphones are good, but definitely go for the lock, or booby-trap the door πŸ™‚

  4. I’m COVETING that bracelet. Also seen earrings by the same people, I think! I’d love a Nook or Sony e-reader since I write mostly e-books but don’t have a reader. It’s a little embarrassing. Great column!

  5. I love that bracelet too, Cindy–in fact I had to make myself leave that website before I bought something. Lots of cool jewelry!

  6. Between the bag and the “book slut” shirt, I may have to amend my wish list.

What I need is more bookshelves — desperately. But I want to get a few of the quirky hide-a-covers. Some let others believe you’re reading about plate tectonics, but I like the ones along the lines of “This is not a trashy vampire romance novel.” Stocking stuffers, my friends.

    – Chelsea / Vampire Book Club

  7. These are so covet worthy. I love them all — and you’ve made them seem even better with your quips.

I have a pair of antique typewriter key earrings — adore them. And I really am going to figure out how to make the book purse.

  8. Oh I love that tote! As for what I want most for Christmas that’s writing related – an agent (hey, a girl can dream, right?). Book related- more bookcases.

  9. I told my husband that I want new bookshelves for Christmas, and he had the nerve to suggest that maybe I want fewer books. So maybe what I really want is a new husband. Since I keep killing husbands off in my plots, this shouldn’t be too difficult. Can my next one be a Vampire or a Navy Seal? Or a Vampire Navy Seal?

  10. Okay, fellow Bama mixer-upper here. I grew up in a family of Bama maniacs but I graduated from Auburn (waving at Suz!). Married to an obnoxious Florida Gator! So, my holiday season is always exciting! I had to chime in and say…Roll Tide and then run for cover.

This was a fabulous Christmas List Suz. I want all of these items but that tote bag is a classic! Thanks for sharing.

On my Christmas want list this year…I want a brand, spanking new contract for one of my unsold novels. A girl can dream and bite her nails.

    Hugs to my pal,
    K.

  11. What writerly thing do I want, how about a set of bionic hands like the typists in the anime “Ghost In the Shell”. That way I don’t have to worry about pesky things like writers cramp. πŸ˜‰ Or maybe a good digital ink pen/pad would be great.

I love the typewriter keys bracelet! How nifty!

  12. I asked Santa for the Nook color… whether he gets it for me or I buy it myself, that will be the ultimate truth.

I love the tote. I have seen those typewriter keys before. They are amazing.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

  13. I must admit — the Jane Austen action figure is cool, but you’ve got it right. She doesn’t make clever quips, she just sits quietly and watches. Then she goes home and writes a scene that lays bare your shallow, mean little social-climbing stratagems.

Now if it were a George Bernard Shaw action figure… different author, different story.

I have to say that I was disappointed by the store’s “Van Gogh” action figure, which comes with two ears. But maybe one of them is removable. That would be *awesome*.

  14. I got the Jane Austen action fiqure a couple of years back. My family has always supported my writing and are always getting me cute and crazy gifts. Last year I got a magnetic crazy cat lady desk toy, I highly recommend it for the ability to procrastinate on rewrites πŸ™‚

  15. Thanks for all the comments! I’ll let random.org pick a tote winner on Friday. It’s looking like BOOKSHELVES are the most-desired item (along with agents and contracts, of course).

  16. OK, this may sound a litte nerdy, but I could use a really good thesaurus. They are life savers when my mind shuts down. Also the natural reader software looks pretty interesting.

  17. I really want a Kindle. I’m probably going to wait until I get to the U.S. next year to buy one. I haven’t even seen a real one yet! I have to say I love your list. My sons thought the liquid bookmark totally cool. I like those book bags–kind of funky and the tote bag made me laugh out loud. ( :

  18. These are all cute suggestions. I just got a Kindle for my birthday so all I want right now are the most recent books from my favorite authors or books in their series that I haven’t read yet in Kindle format. And the free time to read them!

  19. I really, REALLY want a butt cushion. You know, something to sit on so my butt doesn’t get sore while I work. :0) I really like my chair, except that it’s kinda not padded enough.

  20. My dh asked me last night about my list. I shall just forward the link to this blog post plus one to Apple’s sote (ipad). Perfect list!

  21. That tote bag is lovable, but every time I saw a book with the liquid bookmark I would completely freak out thinking someone had spilled something.

  22. That tote bag made me chuckle so loud I had to show it to my colleagues, who also loved it! πŸ™‚

I would love to receive a Kindle Kandle light or a nice Kindle cover with light for my Kindle πŸ™‚

Thank you for the great giveaway!

  23. 1. Someone to build the bookcases I have.
    2. An easy to carry electronic item to carry with me that holds my database of books owned and wanted – have not decided what yet, so open to recommendations.
    3. Oxford bilingual picture dictionaries and foreign language dictionaries.
    4. More books – I have a long list.
    5. The adorable book bag.

  24. All those gifts are awesome.
For sure, I really want Crescendo, a large leather journal for writing and some very different book ends. Yap πŸ™‚

  25. I’m really wishing for an electronic reader. I love to have a real book in my hands. but an e-reader would be great for those trips to the park or the beach. That’s on my wish-list.

  26. Thanks for the chance to win!

What would I like to have most of all for Christmas? I would like to actually finish a story that I have started writing for once. But since I usually prefer to read instead, I would like to get a Nook or Kindle for Christmas. I have been deying that I would like an ereader but I think I would probably love one.

Thanks for the chance to win! Happy Holidays!

  27. Dear Santa,

Can’t say I’ve been too naughty or too nice this year, but you should know that already…right? So here’s the deal, I’ve decided to make your global flight a wee bit easier this year. Since I’m a voracious reader and I have a Kindle, could you email me a gift card from amazon.com so I can download oodles of ebooks? I’ll put a plate of cookies underneath the tree…….

    Your friend,
    Pat ;^)
