Review & Contest: CHICKS KICK BUTT anthology

Ready to kick some butt and take some names? Today, we’re looking at a new urban fantasy anthology from Tor Books which, as you might guess from the title, feature some of the kick-assiest female UF heroines in the genre. The authors are pretty tough, too. (And to confuse matters a little, a couple of these author write more epic fantasy than urban, but still.)

I’m not a huge student of the short story, so how these hold up as standalone stories for a purist, I can’t say. But some of the stories feature characters from series I’m familiar with, and those are fun. Others introduce me to some authors I’ve wanted to try but, mostly due to toppling, ridiculous TBR piles, have not yet sampled. It’s a great anthology to introduce you to some writers and/or characters who might be new to you, or to get a new take on some old friends.

Here’s what and who are in Chicks Kick Butt, which is edited by Rachel Caine:
–“Shiny,” by Rachel Caine, author of the Weather Warden and Morganville Vampires series
–“In Vino Veritas,” by Karen Chance, author of the Cassandra Palmer series
–“Hunt,” by Rachel Vincent, author of the Faythe Sanders Shifters series
–“Monsters,” by Lilith Saintcrow, author of the Dante Valentine and Jill Kismet series
–“Vampires Prefer Blondes,” by P.N. Elrod, author of the Vampire Files series
–“Nine-Tenths of the Law,” by Jenna Black, author of Morgan Kingsley and Faeriewalker series
–“Double Dead,” by Cheyenne McCray, author of the Night Tracker series
–“A Rose by Any Other Name Would Still Be Red,” Elizabeth A. Vaughan, author of the Chronicle of the Warlands series
–“Superman,” by Jeanne C. Stein, author of the Anna Strong series
–“Monster Mash,” by Carole Nelson Douglas, author of the Delilah Street, Paranormal Investigator series
–“Wanted: Dead or Alive,” by L.A. Banks, author of the Vampire Huntress series
–“Mist,” by Susan Krinard, author of the Stone God series
–“Beyond the Pale,” by Nancy Holder, author of the Wicked and Possessions series

Whew! That’s a bunch of stories, yes? I have a copy to give away. Tell me if you’ve read any of the series by the authors and, if so, what you think of them. I have always been a fan of Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series (love those djinn!). As always, four entries are possible: +1 for comment, +1 for blog follow, +1 for Twitter follow @Suzanne_Johnson, and +1 for a Tweet or Retweet. Remember to put your email address on your comment!

  1. OMG. I’d heard this anthology was out there, but didn’t realize I’d *HAVE TO* read it… 9 of the authors are my ‘auto-reads’!

So, even if I don’t win (though my fingers ARE crossed!), this is on the To Be Bought list!

  2. Sadly, the only author I’ve read is P.N. Elrod and I LOVE the Vampire Files series. They couldn’t come out fast enough for me. I really need to get my books unpacked so I can find out where I left off.

I think I’ve read something by Nancy Holder but not something part of the series. At least not that I remember.

I follow you on twitter, on GFC so three entries.
    Thanks!

  3. I’ve read all of Rachel Vincent’s Shifters series and a couple of Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampires series.

I probably have most of the other author’s on my TBR, but haven’t had a chance to read them yet.

    Would be awesome to win.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  6. HOLY WOW…this is a list of my favorite kickass authors!!!

I’ve read Rachel Caine’s Weather Warden series. I’ve also read her new Cassiel (djinn) series. Both are awesome. I’ve read Rachel Vincent’s Shifter series. Loved it. All three of these series are on my keeper shelf.

Here’s where my reading OCD becomes apparent. I have Karen Chance, Jenna Black, Cheyenne McCray, P.N. Elrod, Jeanne C. Stein and Susan Krinard all on my TBR bookshelves. Yep, I said shelves plural. I won’t start reading a series until I’ve collected all available books in a series. When I read, I devour books, and when I find a series I love, I want them all at my fingertips!

So this anthology is a great appetizer from my favorite authors to hold me over until I’ve got all their books for the main course!

  7. I really don’t read much anthology, not because I don’t like them because I don’t come across them often. It seems like a great to introduce authors, get their writing style and also re-visit characters. Karen Chance is a familiar author for me.

  8. I like anthologies as long as I know the series that the short story belongs with. Although, I have found that sometimes when I read one of the short stories, it makes me want to read the series, so I guess it’s a win-win! Thanks for the giveaway:)

OMG – this sounds amazing! Two of the authors I have read – Rachel Caine (Morganville Vampires – read them all) and Rachel Vincent (Faythe Sanders Shifters).

While I would love to win a copy, either way this is definitely going on my “Must Have” list.

  10. I haven’t read the Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine, but I recently won them in the Brenda Novak Diabetes auction.

I am currently reading the latested Cassandra Palmer book by Karen chance – LOVE this series.

I have the Shifters book by Rachel Vincent, in my TBR pile. Adored this series even if I had issues with Marc.

I’ve read 3 of the Morgan Kingsley books by Jenna Black, but stopped because I wanted to kill Morgan for all her whining.

Have a Night Tracker book by Cheyenne McCray in my TBR series. This, along with her Magic series is excellent.

  11. Several interesting series represented here. “Shiny” ties into the Weather Warden books, which are quite good and have one more book coming (due next year). The Shifters, Dante Valentine, and Morgan Kingsley series are complete, and I rather enjoyed all of those. Jill Kismet may also be finished; I’m behind on it, Vampire Files, Morganville, and Cassandra Palmer. To be honest, I utterly lost interest in the Vampire Huntress series a couple of books in – it struck me as trying too hard to be African-American Fiction instead of just good fiction. I absolutely love the Delilah Street series so far, though, and have no knowledge of the other listed series.

Overall, this looks like a solid collection – even if I’ll probably skip a tale or three.

  12. Ooo several peeps I love!

Carole Nelson Douglas – very much enjoying her Delilah series, with all the noir stuff everywhere, Egyptian mythology and gods, vamps, werewolves, and who knows what will pop up next. Too fun! (Her Midnight Louie and Irene Adlers series also totally rock!)

Rachel Caine – love the Weather Wardens, including the offshoot series Outcast Season. The first Weather Warden novel was like being in one of the tornadoes she mentions in the books. And those djinn! Oh yeah! (And her Morganville series also kicks buns! Totally looking forward to the new one she has cooking as well)

PN Elrod – historical and detective noir mixed with vamps. What’s not to like? Heh heh.

  13. Rachel Caine – I read Outcast #1 before I read WW – WHOOPS! Have Ill Wind (hopefully) on the way to me via the library so I can start getting caught up.

    Lilith Saintcrow – have read #1 & 2 from Dante & #1-3 of Kismet + Steelflower

PN Elrod – have read some of her vampire SS in other anthologies

  14. I’ve read Rachel Caine (like a lot), PN Elrod (only read shorts but enjoyed), Rachel Vincent (not my favorite because of the storylines not the writing), Karen Chance (another like a lot author) – the others are new to me but this book is already in my to read list.

I know I read the first three(I think) of the Weather Warden series. I should get back to them, they were good!

  20. I’ve read everyone at least once in that anthology except for PN Elrod…but I think I enjoy Rachel Caine and Rachel Vincent’s young adult series the best. Well I enjoy their writing in general, but I’ve only recently branched into their non-YA paranormal books XD
