YA Review & Contest: Enclave by Ann Aguirre

Today, I welcome a guest reviewer, author Marie Andreas, who writes fantasy-romance-science fiction and combinations thereof from her home in San Diego. You can read about Marie and her writing at http://www.marieandreas.com. Today, Marie is reviewing a recent YA offering, Enclave, by Ann Aguirre. Now…here we go!
THE OFFICIAL BLURB:   WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups-Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.
As a Huntress, her purpose is clear–to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.
Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first she thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.
As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.
MARIE’S THOUGHTS: This is Ms. Aquirre’s  first foray into YA and it’s an interesting start.  (She has many other books in the paranormal and Science Fiction Romance genres.)
Enclave looks very gritty from the front cover, and there are some scenes that might upset a causal reader, but let’s face it dystopian does mean it’s not going to be a peaches and cream world.  The grit is there but not as much as I would have expected.  There are some scenes that might upset some folks with squeamish tummies- but one would think they wouldn’t be reading this type of book.
Plot and grittinesswise- this book in some ways felt very “old school” post-apocalyptic disaster movie/book. The Freaks were pretty gruesome, but did in some ways remind me a bit too much of Reavers (Firefly).
I would have liked more detail as to when they were and what happened.  The timeline felt off with some things feeling like the end of mankind occurred relatively recently (a generation or two) but others indicating it had been far longer. For example, the state of the buildings.  Given what we later find out about what happened to mankind, there was no reason for so many of the buildings to have been destroyed.  Now this may seem like a nit pic, but things like that pull me out of the world of the book. Another petty little nit- there was a wedding invitation in a “tin” (won’t explain more- I don’t like spoilers in reviews ;)).  But really?  A wedding invite?  That made me stop and try to figure it out- not a good thing.
BUT- overall this was an enjoyable book, not in my opinion as strong as Ms. Aquirre’s adult series, but a good read.  The main character was strong and seeing things through Deuce’s (her name)eyes gave an excellent narrator for this world.  Fade, the mysterious fellow Hunter Deuce falls for, was also a great character. Fans of YA books in general will enjoy it- fans of dystopian books will as well even if it’s a bit light on the dystopian aspects (if a post-apocalypse can be light ;)).

  1. I loved this book! I think Ann Aguirre’s first YA novel is really really good. Deuce is a strong protagonist and the action in Enclave is what made me love it! Quite chilling at times but what do you expect when you read about the Freaks!

  3. I agree that it feels like old school. Nothing much is really new for a dystopian novel other than the existance of freaks! I enjoy the first part of the story when Deuce and Fade is still underground but the topside not so much!

  4. I’d love to play please.

  18. I think the Drama Queen and I will be looking for this one…she SWEARS she won’t read a romance, but if there are a post-apocalyptic dystopian society and some monsters, she’ll be totally on board.

  19. I have heard really good things about this book. Thanks for the giveaway.
