Forget the funny stuff—time to read something dark and sexy. Embraced by Blood is the second in Laurie London’s Sweetblood series, but works fine as a standalone. Think dark, tortured hero, strong-willed woman with a child at stake, a bad past relationship…and vampires. One of my favorite paranormal romance series to come along in a while. Want to win a copy? THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Alfonso Serrano is a hunted man. For months he’s managed to elude the Darkbloods, vengeful foes who won’t rest until he’s dead. But he still craves one dangerous temptation: Lily DeGraff, the sexy Guardian agent he’ll risk anything to protect. …Lily is a wanted woman. Her talent for tracking Sweet—a rare blood type that’s addictive to vampires—makes her a prime target for enemy capture. Her only hope is the stealthy vampire operative who stole into her bed…then left her in despair. Danger aside, Lily won’t let Alfonso near her heart again—until an irresistible hunger threatens to draw them back together… and into an assassin’s snare.
MY THOUGHTS: One of my favorite things about this series—well, besides the hot alpha couple—is its ability to keep both the relationship story and the urban fantasy story going simultaneously without it getting bogged down. (Okay, ‘fess up, who hasn’t skimmed over a little of the Lesser stuff in the oh-so-fab Black Dagger Brotherhood series. You know you have.) So I think author London does a great job of weaving the personal and the “professional” lives of her characters together.
Alfonso is a classic tortured hero—withdrawn from his true calling, sordid and misunderstood past, people willing to think the worst of him. Lily, on the other hand, steps beyond the heroine who falls too easily into hero’s arms—she’s complex, with a past that haunts her and a future called into question by her suddenly failing abilities to do what she does best—track the Dark Blood (read: evil) vampires.
If you love a good vampire (and if you don’t, what is wrong with you?!), check this one out.
