YA Review & Contest: SOUL THIEF by Jana Oliver

So, can Soul Thief possibly live up to its predecessor, The Demon Trapper’s Daughter? Well, yes, probably. How’s that for enigmatic? And it’s going to be hard to talk about this book without a mild spoiler or two for the first book if you haven’t read it, so consider yourself warned. I will keep any spoiler very small.

THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Seventeen-year-old Riley has about had it up to here. After the devastating battle at the Tabernacle, trappers are dead and injured, her boyfriend Simon is gravely injured, and now her beloved late father’s been illegally poached from his grave by a very powerful necromancer. As if that’s not enough, there’s Ori, one sizzling hot freelance demon hunter who’s made himself Riley’s unofficial body guard, and Beck, a super over-protective “friend” who acts more like a grouchy granddad.  With all the hassles, Riley’s almost ready to leave Atlanta altogether. But as Atlanta’s demon count increases, the Vatican finally sends its own Demon Hunters to take care of the city’s “little” problem, and pandemonium breaks loose. Only Riley knows that she might be the center of Hell’s attention: an extremely powerful Grade 5 demon is stalking her, and her luck can’t last forever…

MY THOUGHTS: My favorite thing about this series is the worldbuilding, as a futuristic Atlanta is overrun with demons, kept at bay by the Guardians…well, until recently. Soul Thief picks up immediately where The Demon Trapper’s Daughter left us hanging, with Riley feeling shell-shocked and guilty over the explosive events at the Tabernacle and the deal she had to make with Heaven in order to save her boyfriend Simon. Now, Simon’s in the hospital, the push-pull of the (is it ever going to happen) relationship with Beck continues its frustrating dance, and there’s a mysterious new player or two in the picture.
A lot of the book was taken up with Riley’s hunt for the necromancer who bought her father’s corpse to reanimate—yeah, kinda morbid, yes?—and it slowed the pace down a bit, but—as with the first book—we’re left hanging on a ledge, wondering what’s going to happen next. And note to Riley: PLEASE, you and Beck get this sorted out, ’kay?
