#YA Friday: W*n MONSTROUS BEAUTY by Elizabeth Fama

Ready for some mermaids? Today’s featured book is MONSTROUS BEAUTY, a YA fantasy novel being released this week by author Elizabeth Fama (who also wrote Overboard, an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults). See what you think, and comment to be entered to win a copy!
ABOUT THE BOOK: Fierce, seductive mermaid Syrenka falls in love with Ezra, a young naturalist. When she abandons her life underwater for a chance at happiness on land, she is unaware that this decision comes with horrific and deadly consequences. Almost one hundred forty years later, seventeen-year-old Hester meets a mysterious stranger named Ezra and feels overwhelmingly, inexplicably drawn to him. For generations, love has resulted in death for the women in her family. Is it an undiagnosed genetic defect . . . or a curse? With Ezra’s help, Hester investigates her family’s strange, sad history. The answers she seeks are waiting in the graveyard, the crypt, and at the bottom of the ocean—but powerful forces will do anything to keep her from uncovering her connection to Syrenka and to the tragedy of so long ago.
Want to win a copy of Monstrous Beauty? Just tell me your favorite book featuring mermaids or merpeople. Of course, I’m prejudiced since my upcoming release RIVER ROAD features some merpeople. There are also some interesting mers in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
You know the drill, my gilled friends: one entry for comment, a second for blog follow, third for Twitter follow @Suzanne_Johnson, and a fourth for a tweet or retweet. (Please note this giveaway is for a trade paperback ARC of Monstrous Beauty, not the final hardback release, and features a different cover than the one pictured above.)

  1. Oh no, I hate being the first commenter. I’m not sure that I really have a favorite mermaid book, but I really liked Tangled Tides by Karen Amanda Hooper. And I’m looking forward to meeting your merpeople!

    Thanks!

  2. I seem to be seeing more mermaid books lately, although I have to admit that aside from the merpeople in Harry Potter I can’t think of a single mermaid book I’ve read, aside from fairytales about selkies and, of course, The Little Mermaid.

  4. I read a couple of mermaid book (Lost Voices,Antara, The forbidden Sea, Tempest Rising,Tangled Tides)….but sadly they were not really good.I’m still looking for a good mermaid book, and wishing that Monstruous Beauty is the one.

My favorite merpeople are from Kate Forsyth Witches of Eileanan.

  6. ZOMG I’ve been waiting for this book! It looks fantastic!

One Salt Sea (Toby Daye #5) by Seanan McGuire isn’t mermaid-exclusive but they ARE a big part of the plot. And That’s one of my favorite urban fantasy series.

  7. My favorite mermaid story is The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. Of the recent mermaid YA books, I’ve only read Lies Beneath, which was very disappointing.

  14. This sounds very interesting. I haven’t read much mer-people fiction. I obviously adored the Disney’s Little Mermaid as a kid, and I used to write stories about a mermaid and her pet dolphin when I was 10!

  15. I love Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, but my favorite recent book with sea folks would be Lies Beneath. It was weird, but I dug it.
