It’s Time for Bacchus!

Super Bowl? Fuhgeddaboutit. It’s Mardi Gras, or at least the last weekend of the Mardi Gras season, which will culminate on Fat Tuesday.

On the Sunday of the last weekend of Mardi Gras, I’d normally be parked in my folding chair with a cooler and snacks along the 3200 block of St. Charles Avenue, waiting for the parades. Okeanos rolls about 11, followed immediately by Mid-City. Then, immediately after that, is the Krewe of Thoth. There’s a break for a few hours before 5:15, when the Krewe of Bacchus rolls.

Bacchus is one of the largest of the krewes (parading clubs) and one of the largest parades. I’m keeping fingers crossed that things don’t get rained out this year.

People who haven’t been through NOLA Mardi Gras as a resident or a friend of a resident associate the event with debauchery, drunkenness, nudity, you name it. That’s what happens with the tourists in the French Quarter. For the residents of the city (you could not PAY me to go to the Quarter during Mardi Gras), it’s a family event. People camp out on the neutral grounds (street medians) along the parade route and the kids play in the closed-down streets. It’s a lot of fun.

So far, the Sentinels series hasn’t tackled Mardi Gras, but oh boy do I have a book planned! Hope I get to write it because my crew could have a lot of fun during Mardi Gras.

In the meantime, here are this week’s winners! Please email me if you see your name ( suzannej3523 at gmail dot com):

BARB P won The Eldritch Conspiracy from Cat Adams.

AQUARIANDANCER won this week’s Reader’s Choice contest, and chose the new release from Lauren Dane.
