First, a question: What features would you like to see here at Preternatura? I had stepped away from doing as much blogging these past few months as I tried to hit some rough deadlines, and I’m grateful to the authors who’ve stepped in to keep things going. Now I want to get more involved again despite the fact that the deadlines keep coming. Lots of writing ahead!
I’ve had some special features for the blog in the past, with varying degrees of success. The book club idea was a flop, mostly. The “shop talk” feature worked well. As an author myself, I’m not comfortable doing real reviews, although I will recommend books I really loved.
Mondays will continue to be the New Release and Reader’s Choice day. but except for some guests I’ve already scheduled between now and May, I’m going to start limiting guest authors to Fridays.
Here are some things I came up with. Weigh in, and tell me which of these interests you–and other ideas. Stuff you’ve seen on other blogs that might be fun here? Favorite memes?
–Throwback Thursday. Talking about an old favorite book.
–Louisiana Lagniappe or Southern Fried Gothic. Photos, recipes, legends, video tours of Louisiana and “my” South.
–Easter Eggs. Trivia/background glimpses behind some of the details in my books. (I mean, do you want to know what the REAL Rand looks like?)
–Obsessions. Non-book stuff that I find interesting: might be music, art, collecting.
–Music mania. I’ve been a music junkie from way back when, so this would be sharing songs and memories. The first thing I remember buying as a child when I was old enough to get an allowance was a 45 of “Monster Mash,” and that was a loooooong time ago. I have very eclectic tastes and listen to just about anything except jazz and metal.
–Publishing/writing stuff–how things work.
What think you? Other ideas?
While you’re pondering that, here’s a snippet from Pirate’s Alley! Remember this is very early in the process and while this is a snippet now, it might not survive edits!
First, I should say that Pirate’s Alley takes place during a two-week period from December 15 until New Year’s, and picks up about three weeks after the end of Elysian Fields. In this scene, DJ is in a Walgreen’s drugstore, picking up a couple of things for Eugenie, when she spots something she can’t resist:
Halfway down the “As Seen on TV” aisle, I lurched to a stop and backed up. For Alex’s Christmas present, I’d bought him a year’s membership at the city’s newest high-tech gym, but the Perfect Bacon Bowl (“Everything Tastes Better in a Bowl of Bacon!”) looked like the ideal thing in which to hide the membership card.
He’d be totally grossed out, toss it aside, and then I could use it without admitting I’d bought it for myself. Alex considered bacon an express pass to heart disease. I considered it one of nature’s perfect foods. Whoever thought up mixing bacon and chocolate should be given a Nobel Prize for chemistry.
Yeah, I kind of feel that way about bacon myself. When I was in Portland for a book-signing a couple of years ago, I was introduced to bacon-chocolate bars and went from “gross” to “OMG’ in one bite. Sad to say, the bacon-maple beer stayed at “gross,” but it might be because I don’t like beer. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of complete beers I’ve actually consumed in my life–with fingers left over. Ick. Wine? Yes. Bourbon? Oh yeah. Beer? No thanks.
But I digress.
Some dates I’ve recently heard bandied about, although subject to change….
* APRIL 22 is the start date for the second book in the Collectors series, the followup to Lovely, Dark, and Deep; the title is so tentative I don’t want to even put it out there.
* MAY 13 is the print-release date for Lovely, Dark, and Deep…
* MAY 13 is the paperback-release date for Elysian Fields…
* JUNE 10 is the release date for Allegiance (Penton 4)…I hope to have a cover in the next week or so…
* NOVEMBER 10 is the tentative release date for Pirate’s Alley (Sentinels 4)…
May 13 looks pretty epic. Not only will two books pop out that day, but I’ll be arriving in New Orleans for the RT Booklovers Convention. If you’re in the area, I hope you’ll attend at least part of it; I’ll be doing a panel on Southern fiction with Ilona Andrews, Jaye Wells, Diana Rowland, and AJ Larrieu. I’ll also be putting on my Susannah Hat and joining about a dozen other Montlake authors in a fun scavenger hunt with big prizes. Oh, and did I mention May 13 is also my birthday? As I said, EPIC day 🙂
Okay, for the weekly winners (see, I make you wait!). As usual, I’m lagging with my mailings so be patient. I did catch up with my pre-holiday mailings though, so if you were due something from prior to January and never got it, let me know. Some things disappeared in the postal service holiday glut and I might need to resend.
