Scene-Snippet Sunday (Pirate’s Alley) and Weekly Winners

Happy Sunday! It must be time for a scene snippet from whatever I’m working on at the moment, which in this case is Pirate’s Alley!

First a reminder: Tuesday will be the last day that Lovely, Dark, and Deep will be available for $1.99 for Kindle, as that’s the release day for the final episode. So if you download between now and Tuesday, you’ll be able to read the whole book. The price then will go up to its regular cost of $3.99. (Print coming on May 13.)

Okay, so in this scene of Pirate’s Alley, there’s been a bit of a dustup at the Interspecies Council meeting. Remember all the mess that happened at the end of Elysian Fields (no spoilers here!)? Well, there’s a trial and things go awry. DJ and several others end up in the Realm of Vampyre and, well, things go awry again. Funny how that works. Finally, everyone disappears except DJ and one other person….

I landed hard on my back, and had the breath knocked out of me when an elephant landed on my chest.

Drawing in a deep, gasping lungful of air, I flipped my lids open to find a familiar pair of dark-blue eyes an inch or two above mine. An elephant hadn’t landed on top of me, but a pirate had. And he seemed disinclined to move.

Okay, for the weekly winners…. If you see your name, please email me at with the pertinent info!

SANDYG won a $5 Amazon GC for sharing the name of Blackie the poodle :-). I just need your best email.
JANIE McG won a $5 Amazon GC for casting a vote for Cat and Bones as her favorite fictional couple (they came in fourth overall, by the way). Only need an email.
MARY M won a copy of Eat Dat New Orleans for commenting on the “Southern Fried Gothic” blog post. Need a mailing address if you prefer print;
CARL R SCOTT won this week’s Reader’s Choice contest and was wavering between Three or Split Second. Although since you begged so nicely, if you’d rather have a copy of Eat Dat New Orleans, just let me know 🙂
And that’s it for today. Pop back over tomorrow for a new Reader’s Choice giveaway!

    • LOL, Roger. I’m not sure there is an “official” snippet length! If there’s a sentence I like, I go as far as I can in either direction before something spoilerific occurs 🙂 Pirate’s Alley is so tightly plotted it’s hard to pull out longer bits that make sense without a lot of spoilery content.

Elysian Fields ran 106,000 words. I’m not finished with Pirate’s Alley yet, so I don’t know where it will end up once revisions are done. I’d be surprised if it were shorter. Life’s getting complicated in the prete world!

    • Was supposed to say:

What is the short story word length?

      Flash under 1,000 words
Short Story 1,000 to 7,500 words
      Novelette 7,500 to 15,000 words
      Novella 15,000 to 40,000 words
      Novel over 40,000 words

      But, who’s counting…

      • Yep, those are spot-on. Chenoire and Dogtown and Jackson Square were all novelettes. I haven’t done any novellas yet (Chenoire came close), but I have one just waiting for me to find time to write it. It’s called “Pirateship Down.” You can just imagine who that one’s about!

  1. Always love the snippets and especially if it contains a scene with my favorite pirate! Love the “piratesship down” idea for a novella! Congrats to the winners too.
