Now, I have one of my favorite guests today, so help me welcome Jill Archer back to the blog!  Jill is dropping by as part of her virtual book tour celebrating the release of her latest book, White Heart of Justice. White Heart of Justice was published on May 27 by Ace and is the third book in Jill’s Noon Onxy series.

Jill Archer writes dark, genre-bending fantasy from rural Maryland. Her novels include Dark Light of Day, Fiery Edge of Steel, and White Heart of Justice. She loves cats, coffee, books, movies, day tripping, and outdoor adventuring. You can learn more about Jill by visiting her website, on Facebook and by following her on Twitter.

white heart of justice coverABOUT WHITE HEART OF JUSTICE: Since Lucifer claimed victory at Armageddon, demons, angels, and humans have coexisted in uneasy harmony. Those with waning magic are trained to maintain peace and order. But hostilities are never far from erupting…After years of denying her abilities, Noon Onyx, the first woman in history to wield waning magic, has embraced her power. She’s won the right to compete in the prestigious Laurel Crown Race—an event that will not only earn her the respect of her peers but also, if she wins, the right to control her future. However, Noon’s task is nearly impossible: retrieve the White Heart of Justice, a mythical sword that disappeared hundreds of years ago. The sword is rumored to be hidden in a dangerous region of Halja that she is unlikely to return from. But Noon’s life isn’t the only thing hanging in the balance. The sword holds an awesome power that, in the wrong hands, could reboot the apocalypse—and Noon is the only one who can prevent Armageddon from starting again…

And now, let’s hear from Jill…

Lord Lawless and the Festival of Frivolity

One of the earliest scenes in White Heart of Justice is set at St. Luck’s with students celebrating in their school square with demons carved out of Jill Archer 1snow, bonfires, ensorcelled drinks, and an unofficial king-for-the-night. Where did I get the idea for the king and his celebratory feast? From Saturnalia and the Lord of Misrule.

What’s Saturnalia?

Some of you may be familiar with this ancient Roman holiday, but for those of you that aren’t, it was a winter celebration involving lots of feasting, revelry, and other more and less immodest leisure activities. So popular was the festival of Saturnalia that the Roman poet Catullus is said to have described it as optimo dierum – the best of days.

One particularly favored aspect of the holiday was the paterfamilias’ reversal of fortune. During Saturnalia, the masters served the meals. Clothing requirements were also lax and even gambling was allowed. Presiding over it all was the Saturnalicius princeps – the temporary lord of a temporarily lawless land.

In medieval times, a holiday similar to Saturnalia was celebrated in Europe called the Feast of Fools. Some believe the emcee for these arguably unprincipled events had inherited his crown from the Saturnalicius princeps. In England, he was called the Lord of Misrule; in Scotland, the Abbot of Unreason; and in France, the Prince des Sots.

In White Heart of Justice, this feast master is called Lord Lawless.

Pret. Snow Demon

To end my post, I’ll leave you with the only picture I could find of a “snow demon.” Cute, right?

cold hell

And not at all what many of the demons in my books are like…

So, what about you? Would you want to be Lord (or Lady) Lawless for a day? If you could tell your boss to do any part of your job for a day, what would it be?

What about winter festivals? Are you a fan? Do you like bonfires and spiked cider? Or do you prefer hot chocolate?

Thanks to Suzanne for inviting me back here to Preternatura. Best wishes and happy reading, all!

  1. I have Dark Light of Day & Fiery Edge of Steel. Looking forward to adding White Heart of Justice to my stack. Thanks.

  2. The snow demon is adorable!
Thanks Suzanne for introducing new authors!

  3. The snow demon is cute. I’m more of an inside person during the winter. I don’t like the cold.

  4. Hi everyone–it’s great to be back at Preternatura! Thanks for the nice intro and guest blog opportunity. Loved the audio snippet of Allegiance at Kindle Love Stories, Suzanne.

Roger, thanks! Hope you’re doing well. Dawn and Sandy, I may have to carve some snow demons in my backyard next year — as long as they look like the cute one. 😉

Will stop back later today to check for any other comments or questions. Have a fantastic Tuesday, all!

  5. We do have some winter celebration in Belgium too though i can’t really remember when or where specifically. For the table turend it more at our ” carnaval” however that’s more starting in spring (the early “carnaval” have tradition tomake winter leave^^)here nearly each city have its own carnaval and at a different time so the last one is nearly in august^^;; and a lot of them have a “roi des fous” or a “roi du carnaval” who receive the city key for the carnaval only^^

i still have to discover your series^^ as it ‘s on my list to discover and i can’t resist the new release cover ( though better to read the series in order so i need book 1 first^^)

    • Hi Miki–it sounds like your celebrations may have evolved from the Feast of Fools. (Roi des Fous = King of Fools, right?) I love hearing about different holidays, festivals, and celebrations.

Glad to hear you like WHOJ’s cover. Me too! I think the cover artist and art department did a terrific job. Hope you enjoy the Noon Onyx series. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I’m not sure if I’d want to be Lady Lawless for the day, but better that than to be the one bossed around! If I have to be outdoors in the winter, bonfires are great, and I enjoy both hot (not spiked) cider and hot chocolate.

    • I hear you, Janie. I wouldn’t mind being Lady Lawless for a day. I’d probably “demand” that everyone binge read or partake in a “mandatory” movie marathon or try one really weird food they’ve never tried before.

And I agree — bonfires make everything better. 😀

Thanks for the comment. Have a great night!

  7. Congrats to Jill on the new release! I’m just starting her series and I’m so excited to get caught up! Thanks for sharing! Ummm… .I’m more of a background watcher so I’d have to say no 🙂

    • Hi Erin– great to see you here!

I love to observe (I think a lot of writers are like that) but sometimes the best way to observe is to participate.

Thanks for checking out my post. Best wishes and happy reading!

    • p.s. to Erin: hope you enjoy the series. You’ll have to let me know what you think of St. Luck’s Lord Lawless once you reach that part in WHOJ. 🙂

Thanks for the congrats and enthusiasm!

  8. The books sounds amazing and the cover is fantastic. I can’t wait to read it. Thanks!

    • Thanks, Ty! That’s great to hear. It’s always nice when readers say the premise sounds intriguing. Appreciate the kind words about the cover too. Jason Chan (the artist) and Lesley Worrell (the art director) did an amazing job with it.

      Have a great night!

  9. Winter definitely needs celebrations. I am a hot chocolate girl myself. Love the cover. Thanks for your iinfo on Saturnalia.

    • My pleasure, Liz. This past winter definitely needed celebrations. Geez, it was Neverending. So glad to have the windows open, the garden planted, and be worried about wasps instead of ice.

Thanks for the compliment about the cover. Have a good night!

  10. Ooo I’ve read the other two in the series and I can’t wait to get my hands on White Heart of Justice. Thank you for the giveaway.

    • That’s terrific, Amanda! Love hearing from readers who have enjoyed the books. Thanks for stopping by and leaving such a fun comment. Best wishes!

  11. I love the title and the cover of the book. All of the prize giveaways are quite spectular.

    • Thanks, Kai! Having started with the whole “Blank Blank of Blank” title naming thing I was worried about having to come up with another one for B3. Luckily, it came to me pretty quickly.

I’m glad you like the prizes. I had a lot of fun picking them out. I wanted to do something special since this was the third book. Two items from each themed prize pack are from Etsy. What a neat site. Had a great time looking through all the vintage/handmade items to find things that related to scenes in the books.

      Best wishes & happy reading!

  12. Thanks too, Amber and Adaffern. Congrats and kind words are always appreciated about new releases!

I’ll stop back tomorrow too. Have a good night, Preternatura!

  13. I love the snow demon! Sooo cute! I like both cider and hot chocolate. It all depends on my mood. I still need to read this series. Its on my wishlist!

  14. Congrats on the new release! Love the Noon Onyx series. The covers are beautiful too. Even though I am not much of a cold weather fan, I do love my hot chocolate.

    • Thanks, BookLady! What a nice comment. It’s been fun sharing excerpts and chatting with everyone during the blog tour. I love hot chocolate too — and cider. It’s all good! 😀

      Have a great week, all!
