DJ here–I had to wrestle the keyboard away from Rand–pushy freaking elf. I know Suzanne doesn’t do much with the steamy books, but I wanted to help Julie Kenner celebrate the release of the first book in her new erotic trilogy, SAY MY NAME. Back before Katrina sent my life into overdrive *bats eyes at Alex* I read a book called CARPE DEMON: Adventures of a Demon Hunting Soccer Mom, and it made me howl and run out for the rest in the series. Of course that was before I’d met a demon and I might not laugh as hard now, but never mind about that.
So, with that, please join me in welcoming author J. Kenner to Preternatura today. Julie is dropping by today as part of her release day blitz celebrating the release of her latest book written as J. Kenner, Say My Name. Say My Name is out today from Bantam and is the first book in her new Stark International Trilogy.
J. Kenner (aka Julie Kenner) is the New York Times, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, Wall Street Journal and International bestselling author of over seventy novels, novellas and short stories in a variety of genres. Though known primarily for her award-winning and #1 international bestselling erotic romances (including the Stark and Most Wanted series) that have reached as high as #2 on the New York Times bestseller list, JK has been writing full time for over a decade in a variety of genres including paranormal and contemporary romance, “chicklit” suspense, urban fantasy, Victorian-era thrillers (coming soon), and paranormal mommy lit. Her foray into the latter, Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom by Julie Kenner, has been consistently in development in Hollywood since prior to publication. Most recently, it has been optioned by Warner Brothers Television for development as series on the CW Network with Alloy Entertainment producing. JK has been praised by Publishers Weekly as an author with a “flair for dialogue and eccentric characterizations” and by RT Bookclub for having “cornered the market on sinfully attractive, dominant antiheroes and the women who swoon for him.” A three time finalist for Romance Writers of America’s prestigious RITA award, JK took home the first RITA trophy awarded in the category of erotic romance in 2014 for her novel, Claim Me (book 2 of her Stark Trilogy). Her books have sold well over a million copies and are published in over over twenty countries. In her previous career as an attorney, JK worked as a clerk on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and practiced primarily civil, entertainment and First Amendment litigation in Los Angeles and Irvine, California, as well as in Austin, Texas. She currently lives in Central Texas, with her husband, two daughters, and two rather spastic cats. You can learn more about J. by visiting here website, on Facebook and by following her on Twitter.
ABOUT SAY MY NAME: New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner kicks off a smoking hot, emotionally compelling new erotic trilogy that returns to the world of her beloved Stark novels: Release Me, Claim Me, and Complete Me. Say My Name features Jackson Steele, a strong-willed man who goes after what he wants, and Sylvia Brooks, a disciplined woman who’s hard to get—and exactly who Jackson needs. I never let anyone get too close—but he’s the only man who’s ever made me feel alive. Meeting Jackson Steele was a shock to my senses. Confident and commanding, he could take charge of any room . . . or any woman. And Jackson wanted me. The mere sight of him took my breath away, and his touch made me break all my rules. Our bond was immediate, our passion untamed. I wanted to surrender completely to his kiss, but I couldn’t risk his knowing the truth about my past. Yet Jackson carried secrets too, and in our desire we found our escape, pushing our boundaries as far as they could go. Learning to trust is never easy. In my mind, I knew I should run. But in my heart, I never felt a fire this strong—and it could either save me or scorch me forever. Say My Name is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences.
And now, let’s hear from Julie:
With J. Kenner
Give us the “elevator pitch” for your latest work?
Five years ago, Sylvia Brooks forced herself to walk away from Jackson Steele, the one man with whom she’d connected so emotionally and physically that it shook her to the core. Now Jackson is a celebrity architect, and she desperately needs his help in order to save her floundering project.
What is your favorite scene in the book?
There is a scene where Jackson realizes why she walked, and his anger shifts into a sweet protectiveness. He’s hot and sexy before, but that’s when you really (I hope!) fall in love with him.
Hardest scene you’ve ever written:
It was cut, actually, and it was in Say My Name. Sylvia has had a very hard past, and when she remembers that, my first pass was very detailed, emotionally and physically. It was horrible writing it, though the scene was great. But my editor and I also decided it was too much, so I cut it and took another approach. The pain and emotion is still there, but it’s not quite as brutal, if that makes sense.
What’s on your nightstand or top of your TBR pile?
I’m excited to be a RITA finalist in the erotic romance category, so I’m going to read all the other finalists, too! Just loaded up my kindle the other day!
Favorite book when you were a child:
A Wrinkle in Time
Your five favorite authors:
J.D. Robb is my autobuy author! After that, I couldn’t name five. I love so, so many authors, books, and genres!
Book you’ve faked reading:
I’ve never actually said that I’ve read them … but I also have never chimed in with “I haven’t read those” when folks are talking about them. I, ahem, have never read Jane Austen.
Book that made you say “I wish I’d thought of that!”
Oh, man. I’m sure there are a zillion. I’ll go with The Time Traveler’s Wife. I love twisty-turny plots like that!
Book you’ve bought for the cover:
I’m not that visual. I’m sure there are books that caught my eye because of a cover, but if the back cover copy or a story summary in a review doesn’t grab me, I won’t buy it. I’m much more likely to be snagged in by a title (but even then, it needs to sound intriguing.
Most recently, Manwhore caught my eye as a title … and it sounded like a fun story, so I one-clicked!
Book that changed your life:
Carpe Demon (okay, I know that’s not what you meant since I wrote it, but the movie deal allowed me to quit my job as a lawyer and write full time. So, yeah, it changed my life!)
Book you most want to read again for the first time:
I’m a HUGE re-reader, so that’s hard to answer. If you mean re-read as if I never read it before, probably Gone Girl, because I really enjoyed it, but a lot of the fun is not knowing how it will play out, and once you’ve read it, you know!
Question you WISHED someone would ask you (and the answer):
Q: Let’s talk about existentialism. How do you spell it?
Sorry! Couldn’t think of anything else, and that’s my youngest daughter’s current favorite joke!
I have the next 2 Jackson and Sylvia books coming up in short order:
On My Knees on June 23, and Under My Skin on September 1
I’m working on both of those right now. And other things that are coming up are:
The One and Only in October, a horror short story that will be included in an anthology, Dark Screams.
A special project I’ll be announcing in the fall
And I’ll have more Stark announcements coming soon!
