Today, please join me in welcoming author Juliette Cross. Juliette is stopping by today as part of her virtual book tour celebrating the release of her latest book, Waking the Dragon. Waking the Dragon was published on June 9 by Kensington and is the first book in Juliette’s Vale of Stars series.
Juliette calls lush, moss-laden Louisiana home where the landscape curls into her imagination, creating mystical settings for her stories. She has a B.A. in creative writing from Louisiana State University, a M.Ed. in gifted education, and was privileged to study under the award-winning author Ernest J. Gaines in grad school. Her love of mythology, legends, and art serve as constant inspiration for her works. From the moment she read JANE EYRE as a teenager, she fell in love with the Gothic romance–brooding characters, mysterious settings, persevering heroines, and dark, sexy heroes. Even then, she not only longed to read more novels set in Gothic worlds, she wanted to create her own. Juliette is a multi-published author, including her Nightwing series with Kensington Publishing and The Vessel Trilogy with Samhain Publishing. You can learn more about Juliette by visiting her website, her newsletter, on Facebook and by following her on Twitter.
ABOUT WAKING THE DRAGON: The Gladium Province is on the verge of civil unrest as humans and Morgons, the dragon-hybrid race, clash once more. But amid disorder can also arise passion. When the bodies of three human women are discovered in Morgon territory—with the DNA of several Morgon men on the victims—it’s just a matter of time before civil unrest hits the Province. But for ambitious reporter Moira Cade, it’s more than just a story, and it may mean risking her own life. Descending into the dark underworld of Morgon society, Moira is paired with Kol Moonring, Captain of the Morgon Guard, for her protection. Fiercely independent, Moira bristles at his dominance, and defies his will at every turn. Yet resistance proves futile when passion flares between them, awakening powerful emotions within both, body and soul. But as the killings continue, can their fiery newfound bond survive an even greater evil—one that threatens all of humanity, Morgonkind, and Moira’s very soul?
And now, let’s hear from Juliette…
The Good and Bad of Starting a New Series
By Juliette Cross
There is nothing more exciting than starting a new series for a writer. There is also nothing that can fill a writer’s heart with more dread. The fear always seems to accompany the thrill of possibility. I’ll share with you my perspective, though I’m fairly sure I’m not alone.
As a writer, I’m always inspired to create a new world, especially in the paranormal/fantasy genres where I invent all the rules. I’m not limited by the real world. I’m eager to explore the different avenues not only the protagonists of book one will take but also the secondary characters’ paths later on. There is a general time period where I revel in elation, stewing in that realm of world-building and character development. As a reader, I love starting a new series for all the same reasons—stepping into a new world, escaping to a fantastic place I’ve never been before, and meeting characters I could call friends (or enemies).
The downside of starting a new series is the polar opposite of all these things. After book one, the writer must maintain the excitement and overall plot development without boring the reader to do death with rehashing events. But since some readers pick up a book well into the series, the rehashing is a must. This requires a delicate balance and finesse on the writer’s part to give just enough but not too much.
There is also the fear of “what if?” Here’s a typical writer’s internal monologue: What if readers hate book one, then I’m stuck writing this series no one wants? What if I write myself into a corner and can’t get out in later books? What if my muse straight-up ignores me after book one?
For me, the eternal optimist, I tend to stay on the windy side of care as they say. The “what ifs” will creep in, but the pulse-pounding excitement of a brand new world always supersedes the doubts. Thank you to Preternatura for having me on today! It’s been a pleasure sharing a few thoughts with your readers.
