30 Books in 30 Days: Teddy Bear Picnic Edition

bimboIn honor of the upcoming fun at Β Authors After Dark, I’m doing a 30-Books-in-30-Days giveaway. Okay, really it’s so I can pare down my TBR pile. Open internationally, and the book is a mystery–I can only tell you it will be either UF, SF, Fantasy, YA paranormal, or PNR. If you win, you can give me a couple of genres and I’ll match them if I can but I”m a lot heavier on some genres than others. (I don’t have a lot of adult UF, in other words because there just isn’t much coming out anymore.)

All you have to do to enter is answer a question.

So, today is Teddy Bear Picnic Day. Early last century, a composer named John Walter Bratton wrote a song called “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic,” and some company decided to turn it into a holiday 20 or 30 years ago. News to me. Have you heard of it?

I had tea parties with dolls when I was a little girl, but I don’t recall any teddy bear picnics. What I DID have was a favorite stuffed animal. His name was Bimbo and he was a monkey. There is a photo of me on Christmas morning, walking around in my PJs with Bimbo and I look to be about four years old.

So, to enter for the giveaway, what was YOUR favorite stuffed animal as a child? I also had a teddy bear that I loved to death–literally. His arms came off and my mom threw him away without telling me. I cried for days and refused to have anything to do with the replacement bear my distraught parents gave me. LOL.

So…stuffed animals?

  1. Never heard of Teddy Bear Picnic Day. I also had a monkey, he had cymbals in his hands, wind him up and he would play. Did have a stuffed bear that was my favorite. He was light brown with black coveralls and very soft. Darn that was a long time ago….

  2. I celebrated today with my preschool group πŸ™‚ teddy bear shaped sandwiches and a veggie forest lol As a kid I had a stuffed Simba that was the size of a pillow; loved him until I was a teen, then gave him to my dog to enjoy (to pieces lol)!

    • Hahaha–too funny! That sounds like fun :-). I had a more recent-vintage bear when I first got my dogs Shane and Tanker and they played tug of war with him–an arm in each mouth–until he was in rags and stuffing on the living room floor.

  3. Yep, I was familiar with “Teddy Bear Picnic Day” even though I didn’t exactly remember which day it was on (well, now I know and hopefully won’t forget again). What can I say? Teddy bear collector here.
That said, my favorite stuffed animal when I was little was actually a dog (that looked more like a teddy bear than a canine) and if I’m not mistaken its poor battered body is still in some box in the basement. These days though my favorite is *drum roll* a monkey (a plush gorilla to be exact). We don’t do picnics though. He likes to hit the bar on Friday nights to drink some banana cocktails though.

  4. I never participated in a teddy bears’ picnic but had been aware of them. My favorite stuffed toy was my teddy bear however, I didn’t much sit around for picnics with dolls or stuffed toys. Was found mostly running around the park and playing on the monkey bars.

  5. I never heard of Teddy Bear picnic day. I never had a stuffed animal that was a favorite, but I had a Chatty Cathy doll I played with a lot.

  6. I never heard of teddy bear picnic day. I did have a teddy bear when I was a kid that I played with all the time.

  7. never heard of it^^
When little i had two favourite, one big ( for me then^^) Teddy bear that was from to me soon after my birth from teh states by a customer of my father and a little dog ( which had been a promotional gift) i never went anywhere without them…. i still have both of them but more recently a little lynx ( and an owl) joined them….because yes!! i’m still a fan of them ( so soft and as long as i can crush them with love in my arms ^^)

  8. I never heard of Teddy Bear picnic day, but I had a teddy bear, Pinky. I loved that teddy bear, but my mom gave it away when I first went to school.I saw it again after several years and it was nice to see another kid playing with it.

  9. I loved my Betsy Wetsy – didn’t really have a fav stuffed toy that I remember. I love them now, though! I have a purple bear that hangs out in my bedroom and exudes fuzzy warm feelings.

  10. I actually still have my childhood stuffed animal πŸ™‚ It is a well-loved tiger that you can still tell is a tiger only because it still has the black stripes. All the orange has faded away.

  11. Ya know…. I actually can’t remember if I had a favourite stuffed animal or not. I guess that answers the question since I don’t still have it or remember! But if it counts, my dog Sammie has had a teddy bear since he was a puppy. It’s his favorite, he’s never torn it up and he loves to sleep with it πŸ™‚ thanks for sharing!

  12. I had a stuffed squirrel as a toddler. As a young adult, I had a giant stuffed lion that a boyfriend won at carnival games.

  13. I never heard of Teddy Bear Picnic Day. As a little girl, I had a stuffed cat, with long, soft fur that I was crazy about. I was more into dolls and can’t remember any other stuffed animals until I was a teenager (carnival prizes, of course!).

  14. I have heard of Teddy Bear Picnic Day and also the song. As a child I loved stuffed animals. My favorites were a brown bear and a white rabbit.

  15. I’ve heard of Teddy Bear Picnics but never had one. Growing up my favorite was my Glo Worm. Loved that toy, slept with it every night.

  16. I loved horses as a kid,and when I was about 10 yrs old, I got this huge stuffed horse for Christmas. It was the coolest present ever.I dragged that thing everywhere, til I got a real horse lol

  17. Too funny Suzanne. I too have a pic of me at Christmas with a stuffed monkey, and I was about 4 years old as well. My brother had a car, older sis had a bride doll and little sis was in a wagon with a puppy.

  18. I actually had 2 – both were very small soft toys: a small brown bear & a penguin of the same size that had a bell in it. They were the only soft toys I owned as a child & much loved.

  19. My first and favorite one was a blue teddy bear. For a while I actually thought bears were blue πŸ˜€ Than you for the giveaway.

  20. I didn’t know it was a day to celebrate!! Lol. I didn’t have much stiffed toys because I was #4 of 5 kids and all the teddies were destroyed by that stage. I did have a doll that was all my own and I loved her πŸ™‚

  21. I had a penguin named pengy. He went every where with me. Took him camping one summer with my dad and left him in the tent. Our dog got a hold of him and I found him all chewed up. I kept him though and still have him in a box with my baby blanket. Took him out to show my kids and they got a good laugh at his chewed up form. I had to cover poor pengys ears, or the one he had left πŸ™‚

  22. I had a stuffed white puppy called Pal ( it said Pal on his yellow hoodie ) and he had a pacifier. He was super cute and he was my favorite for a really long time. I believe an aunt gave him to me when I was a toddler. I actually still have him. He’s just thrown in with some stuff I never quite got around to unpacking from storage after we moved last year. Oops! Poor Pal!

  23. When I was little, I had a stuffed cat I ‘loved’ all the fur/hair off. My parents gave me a replacement when I was 16. By that time I had completely forgotten about the cat.
