Now, let’s hear from Dena—and help her settle down from a major family milestone!

by Dena Garson

My oldest son passed the driving test two weeks ago and now has his license.  *sigh*

I’ve been preparing myself for this for over a year. Not only for the expense of adding a teenage boy to my insurance (*gasp*) but also the fact that he would be out in the world far more often than I want to think about. It was hard enough letting him go in the car when his best friend started driving. Not so much because I don’t think either of them will deliberately do something stupid. But I’ve seen the crazy people out on the road. I’m out there every day. People who think stop signs don’t apply to them. And even worse, distracted drivers.

Every time I see a wreck I think to myself, “That could be him next time.” The reality is it could be me next time. But for some reason, that thought doesn’t scare me nearly as much.

I know I have to let my little birdie go, that I should be encouraging him to leave the nest, but seesh! It sure is hard on a mother’s heart!

I guess I should be thankful he’s Earthbound and not piloting spacecraft into the next galaxy!

If any of you have suggestions about how to calm my anxiety, leave me a comment.

  1. I was thrilled when my son finally got his DL. We no longer had to sit at the school and wait for the bus to arrive (usually late) from band trips. He could get himself to those early band practices. That didn’t stop me from being a mom and worrying every time he drove somewhere. He is now 27 and a very good driver, which always surprises me, I don’t know why.

    • I’m starting to see the advantage of him being able to drive himself to practices. He even took his brother to practice one day last week since his dad and I were both busy. It was great! I didn’t have to sit out in the heat waiting!!

  2. Kirk without hesitation^^ ( after all he could cheat when needed to save his crew)

now i don’t have a driving licence it stresses me too much just to think about it. I’m sure you raised your son well so that should be rassuring to you …to make you more at peace just ask him to make sure his cell is always charged and he could send you a text when he arrives safely at destination ( at the beginning perhaps not after a few years of experience^^) that way you wouldn’t stay near teh phone in panic

sorry if my advice isn’t the best ( but you sure right a car is safer than a space ship)

happy release and thank you for the contest

    • I hadn’t thought of making him text each time. I’m sure I’ll eventually relax with it, but in the mean time… *sigh*

  3. Let him drive when you have errands to do together. The more you experience his driving and see his responses to the different traffic situations, the calmer you’ll get. It was easier with my daughter than my son and she started driving first.

    • The crazy thing is, he doesn’t ask to drive. We have to almost make him do it. I was the total opposite! I couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel.

  4. I can’t get in the car with my son driving. I am on edge the whole time & yet he is a good driver.

I have to say Captain Jack Sparrow. So much fun.

  5. Captain Hook makes the best Captain – Once Upon A Time version 🙂
