Penton Scene-Snippet Sunday and Weekly Winner and Whiner

Okay, I’m the whiner after a face-plant fall on Friday night. We’re in extreme drought conditions, which has made the land sink and the tree roots that were previously covered are sticking up where I can trip over them, especially now that it’s dark when I get home from work. So–SPLAT. Fortunately, nothing’s broken but I have a twisted knee, back sprain, bruises in places I didn’t know you could have bruises, and am generally limping and whining.

So how about a tiny little scene snippet from PENTON #5? The working title is still ILLUMINATION but that might prove too long a word for the cover so we’ll just have to wait and see. (Although now that I look at it, it’s no longer than ABSOLUTION or REDEMPTION or ALLEGIANCE, so ignore that big of nonsense.)

Nik’s frame of mind is worse than mine:

The Colt .45 lay on the small wooden dining table next to the almost-empty bottle of Jameson’s. Nik had been staring at the Colt for almost an hour. Twice, he had reached for it. Twice, his hand had veered toward the whiskey instead.

He was still stone-cold sober, but it took a lot of even the finest Irish whiskey to make blowing your brains out seem like an idea worth pursuing.

Ah, yes, our psychometric Army Ranger is going to have a tough time of it, I’m afraid, as some of the things that happened to him in Allegiance begin to catch up with him.

I’m still shooting for a mid-January release but much will depend on whether I have to work the day job through my holiday leave to make up for jury duty at the end of this month. U.S. District Court? Your timing BLOWS.

In the meantime, did you win a book this week? If your name is GALENA you won a copy of Belle Chasse in the Reader’s Choice giveaway. Choice of print or digital; if you prefer print, I’ll sign the copy. You also can choose a different book if you wish.

Most of my prize dollars are going into the BLACK DIAMOND and BELLE CHASSE book tours this month. I should be notifying BD prize winners this next week, as it ended on Friday. BELLE CHASSE will run through early December, so be sure to check back each day for links to the blog sites where you can enter!

And see you tomorrow for Reader’s Choice!
