Well, actually, I BLEW through Game of Thrones and am now about a third of the way into book two, A Clash of Kings. I’m talking, of course, about George RR Martin’s epic Song of Ice and Fire series, which I’ve been resisting forever because, well, it’s YUGE, to quote He Who I Wish Would Go Away.
Confession time: Upon the advice of a wise friend, I first binge-watched all six seasons of the HBO “Game of Thrones” series, and only then began reading the books. It was good advice because I have a feel for which of the approximately 10.5 million characters are important. From watching the series, I developed some favorite lines that I have incorporated into my own dysfunctional life. They’re fun to trot out at inappropriate times.
Here are my favorites. Which one fits your mood best these days? Weigh in to be entered for a $5 Amazon (or B&N or Book Depository) gift card.
–“That’s what I do. I drink and I know things.” (Tyrion Lannister)
–“Winter is coming.” and “A winter is coming such as this world has never seen.”) (everyone)
–“The night is dark and full of terrors.” (everyone)
–“You know nothing, Jon Snow.” (Ygritte the wildling)
–“The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.” (Ned Stark)
–“I have a tender spot in my heart for cripples and bastards and broken things.” (Tyrion Lannister)
–“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.” (Cersei Lannister)
–“No man should live longer than his teeth.” (Irri, handmaiden of Dany)
It changes for me, but today, “The night is dark and full of terrors” seems to fit. How about you? And have you read the books or watched the series?
