Game of Thrones Tuesday: Favorite Lines (Vote and #Win a #GC)

Well, actually, I BLEW through Game of Thrones and am now about a third of the way into book two, A Clash of Kings. I’m talking, of course, about George RR Martin’s epic Song of Ice and Fire series, which I’ve been resisting forever because, well, it’s YUGE, to quote He Who I Wish Would Go Away.

Confession time: Upon the advice of a wise friend, I first binge-watched all six seasons of the HBO “Game of Thrones” series, and only then began reading the books. It was good advice because I have a feel for which of the approximately 10.5 million characters are important. From watching the series, I developed some favorite lines that I have incorporated into my own dysfunctional life. They’re fun to trot out at inappropriate times.

Here are my favorites. Which one fits your mood best these days? Weigh in to be entered for a $5 Amazon (or B&N or Book Depository) gift card.

–“That’s what I do. I drink and I know things.” (Tyrion Lannister)

–“Winter is coming.” and “A winter is coming such as this world has never seen.”) (everyone)

–“The night is dark and full of terrors.” (everyone)

–“You know nothing, Jon Snow.” (Ygritte the wildling)

–“The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.” (Ned Stark)

–“I have a tender spot in my heart for cripples and bastards and broken things.” (Tyrion Lannister)

–“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.” (Cersei Lannister)

–“No man should live longer than his teeth.” (Irri, handmaiden of Dany)

It changes for me, but today, “The night is dark and full of terrors” seems to fit. How about you? And have you read the books or watched the series?

  1. I have not read or seen Game of Thrones. I like the quote:
“That’s what I do. I drink and I know things.” Tyrion Lannister

I’d modify it a little to fit me:
    That’s what I do. I read, I drink, and I know things.

    The read: Urban Fantasy.
The drink: Starbucks extra large iced coffee, french vanilla, with 1/2 & 1/2.

  2. –“The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword.” (Ned Stark)

I’d think it would do people good to have to face the consequences of the choices they make for others.

And I haven’t read the books, but am a fan of the TV series.

    • There are small differences between the books and series so far, but they are minor. Although I guess the TV series is farther along than the books now, so I’m not sure how that’s going to work!

  3. The night is dark and full of terrors fits my mood. And will probably fit my mood for the next four years.
I also like “Winter is coming”, but we really haven’t had an long hard winter in quite a while (thank goodness!!).

    • I know, right? That’s where I am with “Winter is coming.” The four-year winter of our discontent and possible ruin. Oh well, trying to stay off that soapbox but it’s hard!

  4. My favorite is “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”

  5. I like no one should live longer than their teeth. I haven’t read the books or watched the series because I just can’t commit the time yet.

  6. I love the quotes. I tend to quote Dr. Who and Monty Python.. lol I have yet to read Game of Thrones or watch the show. You do have me wanting to explore them.

  7. I haven’t read any of the books or seen the series. I’ve heard a bit about it, but that’s it. One of these days I’ll probably read the series, it does sound good.

  8. I’m a big fan of the books and the TV series. I read the books before the series aired. I LOVE TYRION!!

    One of my favorites quotes is a Jamie quote;

“There are no men like me. Only me.”

  9. I’m sure I’m too late to win, but (when I finally got to your email) I had to chime in! I’ve been watching Game of Thrones since the first season and I am hooked. I have not read the books yet – I’m trying to hold out until the TV series is over, but I may not be able to wait that long.

My favorite line today is “That’s what I do. I drink and I know things” – because I did something brilliant to help out a co-worker and she bought me a lovely bottle of champagne! 🙂
