Guilty Pleasures–Historicals, Lady Gaga…What’s Yours?

Did any of you see the Super Bowl halftime show with Lady Gaga? I’ll admit, I didn’t watch the game but did sneak a peek at the highly touted performance afterward on YouTube.

Which brings us around to guilty pleasures. Stuff we like that we really don’t want to admit to, even to our friends. So okay, Lady Gaga is one of those for me. The theatrics are a turnoff. Her wild popularity is a turnoff–I like the obscure, the pure, the rough. And then I’ll hear this song called something like “A Million Reasons” and I fall in love with it and wonder who the artist is. Yep, her. Underneath all the trappings, she’s really talented. So…guilty pleasure.

Good things come in threes, so here are two other guilty pleasures for me.

Reality TV. I don’t know if it has any socially redeeming value, and I can claim it’s “research,” but fact is, I like the “immersion reality” shows. I have limits–no “Honey Boo Boo” for me, thank  you. No Real Housewives of Anywhere. But yeah, don’t get between me and “Project Runway” or “Amazing Race” or “Deadliest Catch.”

Soap Opera Novels. Shhh….don’t tell anyone. It all began when I got my hands on a set of John Jakes’ Kent Family Chronicles, a series of seven or eight (or ten, I can’t remember) historical novels about the history of the U.S. Pure soap opera with just enough history to keep it semi-real. He also had the “North and South” series. Then there’s Susan Howatch’s mammoth multigenerational soap-opera sagas set in Cornwall and Wales and Ireland. Good stuff. Just don’t tell anyone. (Sniggers at awful TV movie clip.)

So…be it entertainment, literature, hobbies, or food–what’s YOUR guilty pleasure. We won’t judge!

  1. Reading one of my collection of pulp (trashy) novels. You know, the ones where you have to hide the cover. I also like the soap opera novels.

  2. I like vampire books. Even some of the bad ones that came out during the 70s. And bad vampire movies like Blacula and Billy the Kid Vs Dracula.

  3. Gosh, Suzanne, I’ve read the Kent Family Chronicles, and loved them, read the Howatch books as well, but I loved them and couldn’t wait until the next book was released. There’s nothing like those anymore and I miss them!

    • I can’t believe you read them too! I still have all those books and writing this blog post made me want to go back and read some of them. No, those big, sprawling sagas aren’t popular these days. I did love them, though.

      • I haven’t read the sagas, but love her standalones: Call in the Night, Waiting Sands, The Dark Shore. I just noticed I do not have The Shrouded Walls in English. This must be remedied.

    • I haven’t watched Jersey Shore but one of my best friends has seen every episode! I enjoy the train wrecks, too. They make my life look so normal!

  4. I read all those John Jakes stories as well! My guilty pleasure is watching Charlie Chan movies. It started in med school when I didn’t want to study for my exams.

    • Yay–another Jakes reader! But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Charlie Chan movie….I might need to try one. I’m very fond of procrastination (and really good at it!).

  5. I still watch one of the existing original Soap Operas -Young & Restless. I tape it every day and still enjoy the sappy romances of the characters especially Victor & Nicki Newman!
