Did any of you see the Super Bowl halftime show with Lady Gaga? I’ll admit, I didn’t watch the game but did sneak a peek at the highly touted performance afterward on YouTube.
Which brings us around to guilty pleasures. Stuff we like that we really don’t want to admit to, even to our friends. So okay, Lady Gaga is one of those for me. The theatrics are a turnoff. Her wild popularity is a turnoff–I like the obscure, the pure, the rough. And then I’ll hear this song called something like “A Million Reasons” and I fall in love with it and wonder who the artist is. Yep, her. Underneath all the trappings, she’s really talented. So…guilty pleasure.
Good things come in threes, so here are two other guilty pleasures for me.
Reality TV. I don’t know if it has any socially redeeming value, and I can claim it’s “research,” but fact is, I like the “immersion reality” shows. I have limits–no “Honey Boo Boo” for me, thank you. No Real Housewives of Anywhere. But yeah, don’t get between me and “Project Runway” or “Amazing Race” or “Deadliest Catch.”
Soap Opera Novels. Shhh….don’t tell anyone. It all began when I got my hands on a set of John Jakes’ Kent Family Chronicles, a series of seven or eight (or ten, I can’t remember) historical novels about the history of the U.S. Pure soap opera with just enough history to keep it semi-real. He also had the “North and South” series. Then there’s Susan Howatch’s mammoth multigenerational soap-opera sagas set in Cornwall and Wales and Ireland. Good stuff. Just don’t tell anyone. (Sniggers at awful TV movie clip.)
So…be it entertainment, literature, hobbies, or food–what’s YOUR guilty pleasure. We won’t judge!
