Join My Book Club!

Hey, if Oprah can do it, why can’t we?

So, here’s the idea. Friday will be Preternatura Book Club day. Each Friday, I’ll talk in some depth about what’s happening in two chapters of our chosen book, then we can chat about what we’ve read. There will be spoilers, so read along if the book is new to you–unless you don’t mind spoilers. It’ll take a while to get through a book, and we might decide to speed it up, but for now let’s say two chapters a week.

For the first book, I thought we could start with something a lot of us are familiar with but don’t mind revisiting–that way, if you don’t have time to read along, you can still drop in and join the discussion. But I want you guys to choose which one you want to read. If it’s the first book in a series, we’ll see how it’s working and decide if we want to continue with the series or move to something different. So, here are some choices. Comment and tell me what sounds fun:

1. The first Black Dagger Brotherhood novel, Dark Lover, by JR Ward
2. The first Sookie Stackhouse novel, Dead Until Dark, by Charlaine Harris (and we can compare notes with what happened on “True Blood” as well)
3. The first Mercy Thompson novel, Moon Called, by Patricia Briggs
4. The first Harry Dresden novel, Storm Front, by Jim Butcher
5. The first Hollows novel, Dead Witch Walking, by Kim Harrison
6. The first Kitty Norville novel, Kitty and the Midnight Hour, by Carrie Vaughn

I’ll take votes through the week and make the announcement on Friday as to which book we’ll be reading, and when we’ll start. This could either be lots of fun or a total flop, but let’s give it a try!

  1. Dead Witch Walking, by Kim Harrison, I always wanted to re-read this series. The whole book club thing sounds like fun. Will join in.

  2. Dead Until Dark, by Charlaine Harris is my choice. I tried reading the book once before and couldn’t get through it, but I love the show. Maybe if I have people to talk with about it, I might enjoy the book more.

Second choice is Dark Lover, by JR Ward. Read it and loved it. I wouldn’t mind reading it again.

  3. My vote is for The first Hollows novel, Dead Witch Walking, by Kim Harrison. These books are full of so many interesting sub plots and the way she builds the characters through out the series is just yummy!

  4. Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison. I already have the book but haven’t read it yet. I have the whole series but haven’t found the time to read.

  5. Book club sounds like fun.

I vote for Dead Witch Walking, cuz I haven’t read it yet. I’ve read the first 3 books on your list, but not the last 3.

  6. Thanks, guys! @Lisa, that’s what I’m hoping–that by only doing a couple of chapters a week, folks can squeeze it in–or just join in the discussion.

Looks like “Dead Witch Walking” is the front runner so far, with “Dark Lover” and “Dead Until Dark” a distant second. We’ll keep up with it during the week and I’ll tally up the winning book on Friday!

  7. I vote Dead Witch Walking I own it and have started it a few times but like what ive read so far so I think that would be a great one to read.

  8. The book club idea is really fun! I’d like to participate, even though I’ll be reading either the Italian or the English edition of the book (depending on which I have).

I’m voting for either dead until dark or dead witch walking 🙂

  9. I bet it would be much easier if everyone would just pick ONE book they want to start with, but we aren’t nice like that–at least I’m not…I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE those BDB boys, and can always talk about them, and I love me some Sookie (Say it with me…”Sooookeh”) and since True Blood is about to have a new season, that might be good, BUT I have a TBR list that includes:

    Moon Called
    Storm Front
    AND Dead Witch Walking,
they are already on my Kindle, patiently waiting…so one of those three would get my vote!

  10. I’ve read #1 & 2 and vote for anything but those.

And no way will this be a flop, you’ve got us readers behind you!

  11. I have only read the sookie stackhouse series (and will do it several more times) but I’m up for any on the list, so count me in for the book group.

  12. I kind of like the idea of going with the Sookie books, just because we can add the “compare to True Blood” aspect to our discussion. But I agree, 2 chapters a week should be doable even for the stories I haven’t read.

I think this sounds like a great idea!

  13. This is a great idea. My vote goes to Dark Lover I love the series and would enjoy hearing other’s thoughts on it
