Preternatura Book Club–and a Chance to Win ROYAL STREET

Today’s episode of the Preternatura Book Club is interrupted by this commercial message:

I’m guest-blogging today over at The Qwillery, and leaving a comment will get you entered for a signed copy of ROYAL STREET. Yep. It will. Note that this is a delayed gratification contest–you’ll receive your book as soon as I have author copies in hand, probably around the end of March. So….go and comment!

Now….Welcome to this week’s “meeting” of the Preternatura Book Club! Today, we’re looking at Chapter 8 of the first book in Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series, Moon Called. My apologies for the uber-slow read; I have too many irons in too many fires these days, so my reading time is seriously limited. We’ll get there!

When we last left Mercy, she was driving back from Montana with the injured-but-healing Adam and her old flame Samuel Cornick, son of the Marrok.

MOON CALLED, Chapter 8

On the drive back, Mercy calls Zee, the iron fae from whom she bought her garage. He’s grouchy because he doesn’t like vampires and Mercy didn’t tell him the part she was expecting delivery on was for Stefan’s VW bus.

We learn at the same time Mercy does–from Adam–that Stefan runs interference to keep the vampires away from her.

Copy Tony’s lady friend also brought in her car, and Zee bargained to do the work in exchange for the woman’s son working for Mercy. Finally, Zee says he might have a lead on Adam’s daughter Jesse but the woman who has info will only talk to Mercy. They sest up a meeting.

Mercy tells Adam why she was reluctant to bring the pack in to help after his injury, and they all agree he shouldn’t contact them yet, even his second-in-command, Darryl. Both Mercy and Ben come up with a werewolf named Warren who’s an alpha but not in line for pack leader as being someone reliable. Turns out Warren is gay, and most packs wouldn’t take him in. Adam did, so he’s extremely loyal–and the rest of the pack don’t like him, so he isn’t likely to be in on a coup attempt if that’s what they’re up to.

The conversation between Mercy and Warren is funny because Samuel and Adam can hear as well as if they were on the phone, and Mercy gets annoyed with them. They decide to take Adam to Warren’s house.

When they arrive, there’s some tension with Kyle, Warren’s lover–who doesn’t know Warren’s a werewolf. When Warren has to ask Kyle to leave for a few days, Kyle is hurt and misinterprets the reason. Knowing Warren can’t tell Kyle what he is without breaking pack law, Mercy takes Kyle to a park and tells him–and that if he shares it, he and Warren–and Mercy as well–will be killed.

So, that’s it for this week. We’re still building slowly. I haven’t read this book in a while, and it does seem like it’s taking FOREVER to get back to the main story of Jesse’s kidnapping. It does all come together, though. Stay tuned!

  1. Yes it is building slowly – worried about Jesse! Liked the blog at Qwillery. Hope to see more blogs as April is getting closer. 55 more days to wait.

  2. Thanks, Roger–and yes, I’ll have signed bookplates available soon. They’re already in–two different designs–and I love them!

I will be EVERYWHERE during April. I’ll put up links as they come available!
