Review & G1veaway: A PERFECT BLOOD by Kim Harrison

So a lot of you have probably already gotten this book in your hot little hands (I’m looking at you, Roger :-)), but if you haven’t and would like to win a copy of Book 10 in Kim Harrison’s Hollows series, read on.
THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Ritually murdered corpses are appearing across Cincinnati, terrifying amalgams of human and other. Pulled in to help investigate by the FIB, former witch turned day-walking demon Rachel Morgan soon realizes a horrifying truth–a would-be creator is determined to make his (or her) own demons. But it can’t be done without Rachel’s blood.

MY THOUGHTS: Well, I’m a big fan of this series, right? So it’s hard for me to be too objective. I have a fuller review running over at, but for this site, let me say that while I loved the book—loved loved loved—it also made me kind of sad. Without spoilers, I feel Kim Harrison is adeptly continuing the process of bringing the series to a gradual close. She’s said in interviews that she anticipates the series ending with book twelve. Then again, Charlaine Harris changed her mind about when the Sookie series would end, so Kim might as well? Wishful thinking?

We saw a little resolution get underway in last year’s Pale Demon, but where Pale Demon had so much of the over-the-top humor we expect from Rachel and the gang, A Perfect Blood is darker, the stakes higher. Oh, Jenks is still funny, Rachel still gets in ridiculous situations (the opening where she’s at the DMV is hilarious—she’s trying to get her driver’s license reinstated and the DMV folks keep telling her she’s legally dead), and Trent’s still intriguing and morally ambiguous. But I do get a sense of things building to a big wrapup.

THE GIVEAWAY: Want to win A Perfect Blood? If you’ve already devoured it, what do you think (no spoilers, please)? If you haven’t read it yet, what do you think Rachel’s happy ending will be by the time the series is over—will she end up with Trent? Will Kisten come back (Kim says no, but she could always change her mind). Will she end up in the ever-after with Al? I’m guessing she’ll end up with Trent–which in itself would make a hilarious spinoff series. 1. Haven’t read this one yet, but am dying to do so. Rachel will probably end up w/ Trent but I’ve gotta say I wouldn’t rule out a darker ending. But then again, maybe that’s just my sunny disposition shining through.

  2. Gaaaaah! I can hardly wait to read this! I really can’t afford HC, so am on library waiting list. #73 for two copies! (I thought I’d added it to my queue months ago. I hadn’t. 🙁 )
I wonder about her happy ending. I don’t want Kisten back from the dead. While I LOVED him & cried, bringing him back seems like it would be a cop-out ending. Trent is growing on me, but I don’t know if I can picture him in a HEA with Rachel (yet. Maybe after I read this one?)
Does Rachel *need* a man in her life for a good ending? Maybe not. Maybe just a solid idea of her self & her powers, with growth in her personal relationships…
Either way, I’m on this ride ’til the end!

  3. Yeah, you know, the more I thought about the Trent ending, the less I’m thinking Kim will go that route. It is almost too predictable. @rissatoo…your ending might be the best. That she just finally accepts who and what she is and can be okay with it. That would be a really good ending for the series.

Here’s the interview where she talks about the happy endings, btw:

  4. I haven’t read the book yet, but did see your Tor review. Can’t wait to read the book!

As for happy endings, I don’t see Rachel settling down since she is too much of an adrenaline junkie. Perhaps she will find some permanent way to deal with everyone who wants to use her for their own purposes because of her unique nature, with a dash of revenge on all who have wronged her!

  5. You might be right, Ted. Rachel’s also impulsive, and I can’t imagine her letting Trent (or Al) having much control over her. Then again, she has TERRIBLE taste in men…except the one we lost.

It’s interesting, in the Q&A with Kim Harrison whose link I posted above, she talks about Kisten and the reason she had to kill him off was because he was Rachel’s happy ending, and it was too soon for Rachel to have a happy ending. She’d written herself into a corner with him.

  6. As I said at yesterday – “Happy ending for all the characters may not make all us fans happy. The important thing is the ride. Fans that are still mad over Kisten still read the books.” I am not a Rachel/Trent HEA fan. Trent turned her into a mink and sent her to a death match. I cannot get over that.
Interesting how Kim’s writing can make us feel for these characters.

  7. I love that too, Roger! When you can get into debates over the merits and futures of imaginary characters….that’s the sign a writer has done a great job of connecting. I feel as if I know these people!

  8. I have to admit, I’m still rooting for a Rache/Ivy HEA – after everything they’ve been through, they deserve it. But first Rachel’s gotta save Ivy’s soul!

  9. I want this book pleaseeeeeeee
I think she should end with Trent.. really they have more in common that they think and not kisten first he is dead and if he came back there will be again problem with Ivy so trent ^^

thanks you so much for this opportunity to win

  10. I am waiting for the paperback to come out before I buy it, but it will be pre-ordered as soon as possible. I so love this series, Kim Harrison keeps surprising me with her twists and turns.
I certainly won’t want Kisten back to life, and I dislike Trent. If you really want a HEA for Rachel, how about a completely new character who sweeps her of her feet?

  11. I really threw the “bring Kisten back” in there to stir up trouble (yeah, I’m bad that way)–Kim Harrison has been pretty clear that’s not going to happy 🙂

I don’t think Rachel’s HEA has to revolve around a guy. Right now, Trent is the most logical choice but, yes, she could bring in somebody totally new…or fix things with Ivy 🙂

  12. I have not read this book yet nor am I up to it yet in the series but I would like to win it.

  13. I haven’t read it yet, but would like to.

    I follow the blog.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  14. oh with all the past transgressions I hope by the end, Rachel gets Trent. They were made for each other in their snarkyery and avoidance of themselves.

  15. I love this series and Rachel has stayed such a delightful character. I cried for Kisten, but he is not coming back and Al, nah so if not Elfie Trent then some other supe better come off and sweep her off her feet or just get her a fling soon!

  16. I really can’t see Rachel ending up with Trent. Just n. On the other hand I also hope than she will ressurect Kisten or some version of him somehow, otherwise she will have to end the series happily ever after on her own.

  17. I don’t think it’s possible for Kisten to come back. If she has a romantic ending I hope it’s with someone new because I don’t like her and Trent hooking up. Too weird.
